Red face Reliance, Haryana government to sign SEZ deal

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Monday said Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries' proposal to set up one of the biggest special economic zones (SEZ) in the state is very much on track and an agreement will be signed June 19.

Deferment of the signing ceremony on Monday between the Haryana government and Reliance in Chandigarh at the last moment had led to speculations that the 2,500-acre SEZ proposal had run into rough weather due to political opposition both within the state and the Centre.

"There is no basis for the reports of any problem. The signing ceremony was deferred at the request of Reliance as Mukesh Ambani had just come back from the US and could not make it to the proposed ceremony," Hooda said.

"We should not politicise this issue. The signing ceremony of the joint venture between Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC) and Reliance will be held on June 19," said Hooda denying that he had met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday to explain the situation over alleged irregularities.

The proposed multi-product SEZ Gurgaon is expected to see around Rs 1.75 trillion of investment over the next few years and create thousands of jobs for the locals.
