Lightbulb Caution FOR all Porur Rajeshwari nagar amman nagar bhel nagar

Major portion of Porur lake covered with aquatic weeds K. Lakshmi Lake is also being used to store water from Veeranam tank — Photo: S.S.Kumar

Most parts of the Porur lake have turned green due to the growth of aquatic weeds. CHENNAI: The Porur Lake, which is used as a storage point for city water supply, presents a pathetic picture with aquatic weeds covering a major portion of the lake bed.
Residents of Porur said besides being a source of ground water recharge for the neighbouring areas, the lake spread over 250 acres was also being used to store water from Veeranam tank for city’s supply. However, it remains neglected for several months now.
A major portion of water body has turned green in colour with the unchecked growth of aquatic weeds, they complained.
R.Soundararajan, a resident of Amman Nagar, said several localities in Porur, including Amman Nagar, Bhel Nagar and Rajeswari Nagar, were inundated with surplus water that overflowed from the lake. The authorities concerned have not taken action to arrest the problem by constructing a surplus channel.
V.C.Adinarayanan, general secretary of Bhel Nagar and Amman Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association said as there was no proper outlet for the surplus water, the residential localities surrounding the water body would be waterlogged for two months even after the monsoon.
Despite several representations to various government departments, including the Kancheepuram Collectorate, the issue of constructing a proper surplus course remains unsolved, he said.
Residents demanded that the lake be desilted and deepened to facilitate more storage of water and the bunds must be strengthened to avoid flooding in the adjoining areas of the lake.
However, officials of Water Resources Department said the aquatic weeds or ‘Neyveli Kattamanakku’ have been cleared from the portion of the lake for about 100 metres facing the Mount Poonamallee Road. The weeds in the interior parts of the lake would be removed in two weeks.
“The Sathya Sai Trust is prepared to provide Rs.1 crore towards desilting of the water body. But we are unable to use the fund as we have to wait till the water level recedes in the lake that helps in recharge of groundwater in neighbourhood,” an official said.
The department has also chalked out proposals to construct a channel to carry surplus water from the lake to Adyar river via Manapakkam. Last year, various areas such as Iyappanthangal, Mangadu and Bharaniputhur were affected due to inundation. Besides widening the existing portion of the channel, new culverts and surplus course would be constructed.
The project would be taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission in about two months, the official said.
