The government yesterday (31 May 2007) approved 23 proposals to set up special economic zones (SEZs), including one from the Tata group, a senior official said.

Last month, the government ended a two-month freeze on approvals of the large tax-free industrial enclaves created with the aim of boosting industrial and export growth.

Approvals had been frozen after thousands of farmers across the country had protested against the government's compulsory land acquisition at some sites, claiming they had not been adequately compensated.

A central SEZ approval authority gave formal approval to 23 proposals and granted in-principle approval to six others.

It deferred a decision on Reliance Industries Ltd.'s proposed SEZ near Mumbai, commerce secretary G.K. Pillai told reporters.

"We have asked for comments from the promoters and the state government," he said referring to certain clarifications sought by the tax authorities from the company on project.

The Tata group's proposal for a multi-product SEZ at Gopalpur in Orissa was approved, he said.
