Default Reliance gets green signal for SEZ at Navi Mumbai

On Thursday, the government gave the nod to Ambani and Anand Jain and directed that they could start construction on the proposed 1,250-hectare Navi Mumbai multi-product SEZ.

The approval from the Board of Approvals (BoA),the single-window clearing house for SEZs, however, comes with the rider that units cannot start functioning until the developers ensure adequate fencing and contiguity of land tracts, officials said. Following worries expressed by the customs department and port authorities, BoA wants the developers to ensure that walls of a specified height are built along the railway tracks passing through the SEZ and that all areas of the zone are connected with one another through bridges. RIL’s 4th SEZ gets rolling

With three zones for pharma, biotech and engineering goods receiving clearance last week, this will be Reliance’s fourth SEZ in Dronagiri. The proposed 10,000-hectare Maha Mumbai SEZ is, however, still to get the go-ahead from the state government. Approval for the Navi Mumbai SEZ came along with 26 other projects and took the total number of approved duty-free enclaves to 341. In addition, there are about 170 SEZs which have got the first stage approval. On Thursday, 21 projects received final clearance, while six were approved inprinciple.

Besides Ambani’s zone, Hindalco’s proposal to set up a 116-hectare SEZ for aluminium and aluminium products in Sambalpur (Orissa) got the sanction from the BoA. ONGC’s 558-hectare Mangalore SEZ for petroleum and petrochemicals in Andhra Pradesh’s Dakshin district also received the formal nod. The bigger SEZs were, however, part of the in-principle clearances and included a 2,000-hectare zone in Chindwara, which happens to be the Madhya Pradesh constituency of commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath. There was also a proposal from Indian Infrastructure Corporation’s 1,000-hectare SEZ in Bhuj that was sanctioned along with Skil Infrastructure’s 5,000-hectare zone in Karnataka. While both would be multi-product units, Tamil Nadu’s Sipcot got an in-principle approval for a 120-hectare SEZ for automobiles and auto parts that is proposed to be built in Thiruvannamalali.
