Indian F1: Hrithik Roshan is Jaypee's choice for waving the flag
It was Sachin Tendulkar who had the honour last year. The second Indian Grand Prix's race will be brought to an end
by actor Hrithik.
Greater Noida: Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan is the star the
Jaypee Group, the organisers of the Formula One Indian Grand
Prix, have chosen to wave the chequered flag Sunday while
Sachin Tendulkar, who did the honours last year, will not be
there to watch the race.
"We have recommended Hrithik's name and we expect to get
the approval for his name from Fomula One Management (FOM)
and as well as Bernie Eccletone," a highly-placed source in the
Jaypee Group told IANS.
Hrithik is among many celebrities flocking to the Buddh
International Circuit (BIC) to witness the second edition of the
Indian GP.
Sachin, a motor sports enthusiast, decided to skip the race and instead practice with the Mumbai cricket team ahead
of the Ranji Trophy match against the Railways.
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will also give the race a miss while his teammates Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli and
Harbhajan Singh are expected at the BIC, said the source. Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, too, has
confirmed his presence.
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Pakistani cricketer husband Shoaib Malik will be be there as Sahara Force
India's guests.
Among other Bollywood actors likely to be present are Arjun Rampal, Sonakshi Sinha and Ajay Devgn.
The organisers are hoping Sports Minister Ajay Maken also shows up at the event.
"We sent him the invite long time ago. We are confident he will come this time," said the source.
Maken did not attend the inaugural race last year as he was reportedly not extended the invitation well in time.

Default All stop on expressway to hear F1 roar

Traffic on road to Buddh International Circuit crawled as thousands of fans came to Greater Noida.

The Buddh International Circuit looked like a fair ground from the Yamuna Expressway on Sunday. At 2.45 pm, the film song Om Shanti Om blared from the speakers and a helicopter hovered overhead with a camera crew.

Whatever was going on inside wasn’t visible from the expressway. Nonetheless, people stopped their cars and tried to sneak a peek or kept an ear out towards the direction of the circuit.

Exactly 15 minutes later, a big roar was heard and the sound of more than 23 Formula One cars reverberated across the area. The second edition of the Indian Grand Prix had begun. The noise was ear-splitting even on the expressway, around 500 metres from the track.

Ravi Kashyap was among those who stopped their cars to “soak in the sound”. “We wanted to watch the race, but family engagements came in the way and we had to go to Agra. We timed our return journey in such a way that we were near the circuit around 3 pm. I wanted my daughters to feel the sound of Formula One cars. They couldn’t believe how loud they are. It’s incredible,” he said.

Kashyap, however, was fortunate enough to escape the attention of security guards. People weren’t allowed to stop on the expressway.

“Last year, people from nearby villages and others stood here throughout the race. This year, we are told not to allow any car to stop. A fencing has been put up on both sides, so we haven’t had to deal with the villagers,” Ashish Kumar, a security guard, said.

“Of course, by the time we reach a spot to ask a family (who have parked their vehicle) to leave, someone else stops to take a look at the circuit. But the people cooperated with us,” he said.

Last year, the slip roads were open and autorickshaws ferried people from one gate of the circuit to another. This has been banned this year.

“There are people deployed at each entrance to help the visitors. With more than 70,000 fans coming to watch the race, it took weeks of preparation to make the arrangements,” a Jaypee official said.

Officials said no hawker selling F1 merchandise were allowed outside the circuit. “We realised last year that they prevent free flow of traffic to the circuit. They could be a possible security threat as well,” an official said.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ashok Kumar said: “We have deployed 2,500 police personnel for the event to make sure that everything runs smoothly.”

Traffic was more or less smooth in the afternoon. “We decided to collaborate with Vodafone to keep the road, including the DND flyway, toll free from 8 am to 10 pm so that people could reach the circuit on time. By 3 pm, more than 30,000 cars had reached the circuit,” an officer said.

“For the estimated 25,000 vehicles heading towards the circuit, there was only a small snarl on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway in the morning. Several people reached the venue early and that helped. However, there was a snarl in the evening as people rushed to get back home. The Santana concert in Greater Noida right after the Grand Prix added to the chaos,” the officer said.
