Parallel to the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, MMRDA plans to have a Metro corridor to bridge the distance between Navi Mumbai's residential nodes and south Mumbai.
Officials say the addition of Metro tracks would bring travel time along the 22-km route down to 35 minutes. According to the officials, the new design and the proposal would later be forwarded to the state cabinet for approval; once the plan gets the go-ahead, the tendering process would start. The new Metro corridor will reach Belapur where it would meet the proposed Mankhurd-Panvel Metro Corridor. On Sewri side, the Metro would be attached to third Colaba-Bandra-Airport Metro line at Prabhadevi. |

Navi Mumbai will get its first metro soon. City and Industrial Development Corporation passed a proposal for a circular metro rail from Belapur to Taloja, Khandeshwar to MIDC and MIDC to Taloja.
Unlike the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which is constructing metro corridors on a BOT basis, Cidco has decided to finance it with its own funds. “We plan to start the work on the first corridor by March this year. Since we are using our own funds, the work is expected to start soon,” a senior Cidco official told TOI. Cidco first plans to start work on the Belapur-Taloja sector. Cidco’s additional chief engineer (railway projects) B B Mehta said, “The other sectors will require permissions as they come under the purview of Coastal Regulation Zone regulation of the Environment Protection Act. Work on the Phase-2 will start only after the environment clearances are granted.” The first sector is 10.15 kilometres and the second one, 8.15 kms,” said Mehta. Cidco officials said the metro will not cater to the proposed airport, but will be beneficial to Taloja and northern parts of Kharghar. “The first corridor will have 10 stations,” a Cidco official said. The first phase will cost Rs 1,800 crore and the second, Rs 1,400 crore. The first will take three years. |

Bhujbal said that his government had asked the Centre to assign priority to the constructions of Mumbai-Goa highway and Aurangabad-Beed roadway. "There's been no response from the Centre so far," he said. "Owing to the increased traffic movement and spurt in accidents on these highways, we had asked for urgent approval for these projects. I had held discussed with Kamalnath last year, but sanction is still awaited," he said.
Work order for detail project report (DPR) for the Mumbai-Goa highway was issued in October 2005, and draft DPR was submitted to the ministry in January 2010. This led to the delay in the project. |

Mega City Navi Mumbai will be a sustainable city of mixed-use neighborhoods with focused development in three distinct land areas: Entertainment City, Energy City, and IT and Telecommunication City. Located along the Mumbai-Pune business corridor, the vibrant new city will attract world-class businesses. Navi Mumbai will be supported by the type of infrastructure, community facilities, retail and entertainment services required to create an integrated live-work community. It should set a sustainable precedent for similar large-scale developments in India.

Mumbai: After a brief lull, the Maharashtra government is back in action with its ambitious project—Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). The government has finally made up its mind to have eight lanes for the proposed 22.5-kilometre sea link. The sea link project (18 km on creek and 4 km on land) commencing from close to Sewri railway station and ending at Nhava-Sheva will be completed on build-operate-transfer basis.
A presentation in connection to this was made to chief minister Ashok Chavan by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), in Mantralaya, on Thursday. “A second presentation by the MMRDA will be made to Chavan on Friday, before taking the final call on this project,” said public works (public undertaking) minister Jaidatta Kshirsagar. “The project will be done on BOT basis,” the minister added. The proposal for the bridge going on for years was originally estimated at Rs 3,000 crore. Later, the plan was altered and a six-lane bridge at a cost of around Rs 6,000 crore was suggested. However, with more changes in the design (making it to eight lanes) the cost has now escalated by Rs 1,700 crore. “Twenty per cent of the cost will be given by the central government as the viability gap funding,” ("They believe central govt." :-)) the minister said. For this project, earlier the the Reliance Energy-led consortium and a consortium led by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries were in the fray, but the bids of both parties were cancelled on the grounds of being ‘unrealistic’. Following the feud between Ambani brothers, the government decided to go ahead with proposal with the help of its two agencies—MMRDA and MSRDC. The cabinet sub-committee directed the MMRDA to take care of the financial aspect of the sea link and MSRDC to carry out the work. “The eight-lane bridge is estimated to cost around Rs 7,700 crore and it will take nearly four years to take the project to its logical end,” Kshirsagar added. Once ready, the sea link will cut the time taken to cover the distance between Sewri and Nhava-Sheva to 30 minutes, from the existing two hours. According to the minister, over 35% of the traffic towards Panvel will get decongested once the project is over. “The toll prices are fixed, but the bidder has the choice to decide on how many years he would need to recover the cost and hand over the bridge to the government,” Kshirsagar added. |

enders for the proposed Navi Mumbai airport are likely to be floated in the next six month and the project is "very much on track", Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said today.
"The airport project is very much on track. The tendering process will be initiated over the next six months and I hope it to be completed by the end of this year," Patel told reporters at a function here. "The airport is already delayed by three years. We expect the first phase to be operational by 2013," he said. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra, the project implementation agency, has already acquired 75 per cent of the land for the airport, Patel said, adding, "we are awaiting the final clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forest. |

Mumbai: The citys many waterways have always been underutilised, but that may finally be rectified with the MMRDAs announcement to develop transport services on the eastern waterfront.
If all goes as planned, the Mumbaikars long commute between Navi Mumbai and the island city will be reduced by at least half an hour. In its 2010-2011 budget, the development authority has allocated Rs 100 crore to launch catamaran and hovercraft services for commuters. Provisions are also being made to launch roll-on and roll-off services to transport vehicles and other cargo. The 45-minute ferry services will be run between Ferry Wharf in south Mumbai and Vashi, Nerul and Belapur. There will also be a waterway to connect Ferry Wharf to Mandwa, Uran and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). Services will be operational all through the year, except during the monsoon. Each catamaran or hovercraft will be able to carry around 150-300 passengers. Besides passenger transport, we will start roll-on and roll-off services for commuters wherein they will be able to load their cars on boats, which can then be ferried to Mandwa. From Mandwa, they can resume their journey by road, said metropolitan commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad. The MMRDA will develop passenger terminals at Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Mandwa, Ferry Wharf, and subsequently at JNPT and Uran. While private firms can run catamarans , hovercraft and boats, ticketing will be controlled by the state government. A similar service is being planned on the west coast by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). In the event that the ongoing MSRDC bid to attract firms for the project fails, it may come to the MMRDA for implementation, said Gaikwad. Boat services to Airoli and Ghansoli have not been considered as yet. |
