Btw, Arun, add to your point:-

The govt is soon going to allow pvt companies to float their own tax-free bonds for 5 yrs period. This will start first with infra cos. Man, pvt cos will definately yield more returns as well. So, wait for these bonds to hit the market.
And I doubt companies like Reliance or SBI will go bankrupt...so you will have some other avenues to earn higher interest apart from banks

You don't trust blue chip companies, fine. However, if you put your money in a 10 year zero coupon government bond, you will more than double your money. This is a guaranteed 100% profit on your investment in 10 years, and this is guaranteed by the govt of India.

Why are you looking only for a 30-50% profit from RE?

Just asking..
or....if he does not like bluechips, he can always invest in midcaps.
They come in all hue and colours

BTW..are individuals allowed to buy Govt bonds...and is there any minimum amount one has to purchase (say 50k) ?
..I thought its limited to fund /banking houses only.

and BTW again,
Stohid...Share markets is THE place for investments....Just buy Sharekhan/AngelTrading monthy/Quarterly picks.... you will end up with around 20-50% returns in about 18months, take away few months here and there.
I made a neat profit of 45K investing directly in stocks since March last year.My amount invested varied between 50k-1.5L in this period.

Just a illustration....don't take it otherwise.

Private companies are having Fixed Deposit schemes which give good returns. Currently Tata Motors has FD yield of above 11%. THere are also other good pvt companies like M&M etc where you can get good return on FD. Debentures are another option to get good returns.

.
The rise in NPA's is pretty marginal. And its not the residential mortgage market where these NPA's are rising. Its typically in the agriculture segment and the SME's where these NPA's are rising. India's residential customers are pretty strong and creditworthy.
