The organised retailing industry in India, estimated at Rs 35,000 crore, would need a whopping one million people to help it grow in the next 10 years.
According to the Retailers' Association of India (RAI), the size of the retailing industry was around Rs 9.30 lakh crore. "Of this, organised retailing industry is around Rs 35,000 crore," it said on Wednesday. RAI sources said retailing sector in India was highly fragmented and predominantly consisted of small independent, owner-managed shops. With the introduction of several household names, there has been a boom in retail trade in the past few years. Quoting a Commerce Ministry report, RAI sources said, that the retail sector in India is likely to grow seven per cent per annum and would require nearly one million people to cater to its growth. RAI CEO Gibson G Vedamani said that dearth of professionals across all levels of the retail sector would exist over the next few years. |
