Default Sriperumbudur - Greenfield Airport coming again !!!!!!!!

A proposal for a second airport for Chennai at Sriperumbudur, which was put on the backburner over a year ago, may soon take shape as a team of official representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is coming down on Wednesday for a preliminary feasibility study.
A six-member team will visit Chennai to assess the techno-economic feasibility of dual airport operations in Chennai and Sriperumbudur, and give a report in six months, airport sources said. “ICAO has appointed Louis Berger Group Inc Co From USA to conduct the study. A joint visit by ICAO officials and state government officials will take place on Thursday. The team will be back later as per their requirement,” Devraj, regional executive director of AAI said.
AAI had funded the whole study by investing about Rs 5-6 crore after the state government showed interest in developing the new airport.
AAI Chairman V P Agrawal had told the media in July last year that the new airport project would be a joint venture with TIDCO. Following this, the project was shelved. However, with ICAO's visit it's revived again!

Study for second airport begins

International Body To Assess Viability Of Greenfield Project At Sriperumbudur

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai: After a delay of more than a year, experts from International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on Wednesday visited Sriperumbudur to kickstart a study to assess techno-economic feasibility of building a second airport there.

The study, which is expected to take over six months to complete, is necessary to ascertain that the proposed airport, spread over 4,820 acres in Sriperumbudur taluk, will conform to international civil aviation norms. India follows standards set by ICAO for civil aviation.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) wanted ICAO to carry out the study towards the end of 2008, but it was delayed because the AAI did not pay the fee.

Sources said that a four-member team — one representative from ICAO and three from Louis Berger Inc, a consultant — visited the site accompanied by AAI officials and state government officials. They spent over two hours inspecting the land.

“They did not go around the entire area earmarked for the new airport but had a bird’s eye view of the area in Sriperumbudur in the afternoon,” an official said. The team will assess in detail the economic feasibility, technical feasibility and also the environmental impact of the project.
Though it is not clear whether the airport will be constructed in the near future, the state government has already identified the required land at Sriperumbudur and has also frozen the land. It is expected that land acquisition will cost anywhere between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore.

Land acquisition for the airport can start only after ICAO submits its report. The AAI has already conducted a feasibility study and confirmed that an airport may be constructed at the 4,820.66 acre of land in Sriperumbudur taluk and Tiruvallur taluk.
The new four-runway airport was conceived as a greenfield project, but was later renamed as second airport for Chennai because the state government was particular that both airports should function, sources said.

From what I know unofficially (heard), due to political reasons the second airport was dropped (atleast temporarily).

However, I think there is expansion already in the meenambakkam airport, chennai and there is lot of investment turned in here (instead of greenfield). So, personally it might not or it might be delayed until Greenfield is thought again!

May be there is a chance of Cargo, if at all something comes.
