Default 2 Metro trains on their way to Gurgaon

GURGAON: With hardly three months left before the network opens for commercial operations, the Rapid Metro authorities claim that things are moving as per schedule and the deadline would be met.

"Things are moving as per plan and almost all the infrastructure is in place. Already two trains have arrived and two other trains are on their way and will reach Gurgaon by the end of this month. In all five trains will be on the network but since one train will always be on standby, we can say that we will have all the operational trains in couple of weeks," said a Rapid Metro Rail spokesperson.

"In the meanwhile, the electrification work and lying of tracks is going on as per schedule and as soon as it is complete we are likely to ask the commissioner of rail safety to come and inspect the line. Once we get this clearance we will start the commercial operations. Once these two trains arrive by the month end, we will integrate them with the network and the trial runs will begin. The trial run for the two trains that are already here are going on every day," he said.

There are a total of six stations on this metro network that connects the existing Delhi Metro rail network at Sikanderpur. However, initially only five stations will be operational as the work at the Shankar Chowk metro station is still going on. The deadline for the project is March 2013 and the commercial operations are likely to start April.

Default Govt gives green signal to extend Rapid Metro

The Haryana government on Thursday gave its nod to extend the upcoming Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon (RMG) network up to seven kilometres towards south to cover more areas of the Millennium City. Work on a five-km RMG track between Sikanderpur and DLF Phase-2 is about to be completed and the rvice is expected to start by March 31.

On Thursday, the state government signed an agreement with the IL&FS group for the construction of the additional seven-kilometre stretch along the Golf Course Road.

With six stations, the extended route will be an elevated stretch with two-way standard gauge tracks. It will start from Sikanderpur Metro station near Bristol Chowk and terminate at Golf Course Extn T-junction.

The elevated track would come up on the centre median of the Golf Course Road which is being widened up to eight-lanes on both sides. Unlike in the current plan of the 5-km RMG, a couple of stations on the extended route would have parking lots.

The extended route will benefit people commuting between DLF City Phase I, 4 and 5, independent houses and gated communities in sectors 27, 28, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55,56 and 57.

The network will cover localities like Suncity, Central Park, Alchemist Hospital and corporate offices situated along the Golf Course Road.

The construction work on the new project worth R2,143-crore is likely to take off sometime in March and it is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

We propose to achieve financial closure in a couple of months and start construction of the project by March. We plan to complete the project and get it rolling in 30-33 months, said Sanjiv Rai, managing director IL&FS Rail Limited, after signing the agreement with DPS Nagal, chief administrator of Huda in Chandigarh.

Default Rapid Metro promises safety for women

GURGAON: The Rapid Metro authorities have said that stringent training is being provided to the train operators and station managers and claimed every effort is being made to provide a secure atmosphere, especially for women commuters.

"We are providing multi-disciplinary training to our employees so that they can multitask. All the 32 of those who are in the first batch can man the train as well as double up as station controllers. First we conduct the psychometric test to check the mental level and reaction time of the train operator/station controller. From next week, we will start the practical training of this batch. The training will be conducted real time wherein our employees will conduct trial runs on the trains that have already reached Gurgaon," said Sarvesh Tiwari, spokesperson, Rapid Metro. The employees have already undergone training in signal, station management and train operations at the DMRC training institute in Delhi.

The Rapid Metro managing director, Sanjiv Rai, too affirmed that providing a secure mode of transport, especially for women commuters, is of utmost priority. "The recent gang rape in Delhi has really shocked every one of us and we want to make travelling in the city safe and efficient for the residents and those who come here for work. We will do everything we can to make our network more secure and will synchronize our train timings with that of the Delhi Metro so that commuters do not have to waste time," he said.

Default Skywalks to connect Rapid Metro stations with DLF buildings

The Metro will have the unique feature of third-rail electrification and not have overhead power cables. The concessionaire firm Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) has started work on the skywalk to connect its terminal station at Sikanderpur to DMRCs station for network integration allowing passengers to board RMG trains at Sikanderpur and vice versa. Two of the six Metro stations, such as Sikanderpur and Gateway Tower, would also have two police booths.

Gateway Tower is the only Metro station which would not be completed by April due to land acquisition row.

Sanjiv Rai, chairman and managing director, RMGL, said, The company had plans of constructing three skywalks at Sikanderpur Metro station, Belvedere Tower and DLF City Phase 2, respectively.

There is a tentative plan for Phase 2 Metro station too but the firm is yet to take a final call on this, he added. We have plans to connect DLF City Phase 3 Metro station with DLF Cyber Green and RBS buildings through skywalks on its mezzanine floor, while Belvedere Tower Metro station will be connected with building no. 10 on its terrace. The plan to connect building no. 5 with Phase-2 Metro station is yet to be finalised. Work on these skywalks is likely to kick off after the launch of the RMG in April. We will also talk to the owners of DLF to gain access to their buildings, Rai added.

The RMGL has been conducting partial trial runs for trains as some parts of the 6.1-km-long track are still incomplete.

Default Three more skywalks in offing

Even though the Rapid Metro authorities expect a ridership of around one lakh passengers per day in the first year of operation itself, they feel it's not going to be that easy.

Therefore in order to attract more office goers to leave behind their cars and travel by metro, they plan to construct three skywalks that will directly connect three of the six metro stations with the various office buildings in the cyber city area. These will be different apart from the skywalk coming up at Sikanderpur which will connect the Rapid Metro network with the Delhi Metro network.

Authorities hope that these skywalks will encourage office goers to opt for the metro instead of using their private vehicles. However, these three skywalks will be constructed only after the network becomes operational in mid-April this year. They say that their focus right now is to complete the work within the set timeframe and do not want to divert their resources in constructing these skywalks right now.

"Cyber City is the business district of Gurgaon having hundreds of offices with thousands of employees working there. We believe if we provide a walkway that will directly land them inside their office buildings from our metro station, they will be more than happy to get into the metro. We have finalized the location of two walkways whereas we are still contemplating if the third is actually required or not. In case we feel the need we will construct this as well," said Sanjiv Rai, managing director, Rapid Metro.

"The skywalk will connect our ticketing area to a mezzanine floor in the office building so that commuters can practically walk into their workstations. Our focus right now is to complete the existing work on time," he said.

"The skywalk will connect our ticketing area to a mezzanine floor in the office building so that commuters can practically walk into their workstations. We have indentified the locations and will begin the construction work after we complete phase-I and our metro becomes operational. Our focus right now is to complete the existing work on time," he said

Default Rapid Metro skywalk to be completed within a month

Work on the skywalk connecting the existing station of the Delhi Metro with that of the Rapid Metro at Sikanderpur is likely to be completed within a month's time. This 100 metre walkway will connect both the stations at the platform level and will provide seamless movement to commuters of both networks. The commercial operation of Rapid Metro is set to start by mid-April.

According to Rapid Metro officials, it will take commuters less than a minute to interchange the network by using this elevated walkway. "This walkway will connect the paid area of the Delhi Metro to the paid area of our station. It means only valid ticket holders will be able to use the walkway. We have calculated the time and it should take less than 45 seconds to reach one station from the other," said Sarvesh Tiwari, spokesperson, Rapid Metro.

"The average width of this walkway is around nine metres and there will be a lift, escalator and staircase at both ends. In fact, one arm of this walkway will go 5.5 metres underneath the existing viaduct of the Delhi metro. The entire skywalk will be covered to protect commuters from extreme weather conditions," he added.

And, due to the twin ticketing system, the commuters do not have to pay twice to use the two networks. "Rapid metro commuters can use the same ticket to travel in the Delhi Metro network and similarly the commuters coming from Delhi will not have to again stand in queue to purchase a ticket in order to board our train. They can use the smart card or token to travel in our train," Tiwari said.

Authorities hope that this will increase the ridership of both the networks and will provide convenience to commuters. The authorities are also planning to synchronize the train timings so that commuters do not have to waste time waiting for the trains to arrive. "Since it will take approximately a minute from the time a commuter gets off one network and reaches the platform of the other network, we will time our trains accordingly, so that no time is wasted," said Sanjiv Rai, managing director, Rapid Metro.
