An organised underworld is rearing its head in India's IT hub, Bangalore. The real estate boom here has resulted in the emergence of a land mafia in the last few years, reports CNBC-TV18.
The real estate boom sparked off by the IT revolution in Bangalore has led to the rise of a land mafia in the city. There's been almost a 70% price hike in residential apartments, and land values have almost doubled in some cases.
And the mafia is making most out of the situation by extorting money from real estate agents and landowners. Law and order officials fear Bangalore is becoming a haven for the underworld.
Lex Luthor, the villain in Superman Returns says "It's all about land - You could manufacture anything else but you can never make land." And perhaps that best sums up what has for centuries been at the centre of family disputes, business rivalry and now the growing real estate and underworld nexus.
