Delhi residents will no longer be able to start unauthorised constructions in their society flats.

Observing the menace of encroachment and unauthorised constructions in group housing societies, Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) Tejendra Khanna has issued an order banning such activity.

According to a senior official, an order to this effect was issued from L-G's office last week and has been sent to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The civic body has been asked to keep an eye on such activity and related complaints. The order prohibits, with immediate effect, any illegal construction or alteration in societies and directs action against the offenders.

An official of the MCD's engineering department said people had been found altering the basic structure of a society or making a concrete structure on the rooftop, which is illegal.

'The residents claim the Master Plan 2021 is being reviewed and small encroachments can be allowed with the hope of further regularisation,' the official said, adding that any kind of encroachment was illegal.

Recently, a resident of the upmarket Eastend apartment in Mayur Vihar-I had raised the issue of illegal constructions in her society. Anupama Jha had brought it to the notice of the civic bodies, local police and even the LG's office that illegal construction was going on in a flat on the 8th floor.

'My repeated pleas to the owner fell on deaf ears. The construction can lead to the collapse of the roof of my flat,' Jha, who lives on the 7th floor, said.

Jha added that the authorities had warned against tinkering too much with the existing construction, as it could lead to the collapse of the building.

There are hundreds of apartments and group housing societies in Vasant Kunj, Mayur Vihar, Patparganj, Dwarka and Rohini.

According to an estimate, there are around 300 societies in Dwarka, 200 in the Outer and West Delhi areas and around 110 in East Delhi.

To check illegal constructions, a special task force (STF) is already on the job. It is allowed to take action against constructions undertaken illegally after February 2007.

According to an official at the L-G's office, the STF has received around a lakh complaints from across the city since March 2011.

Sources revealed that officials working against encroachment had to face resistance from influential people, including politicians who have been found involved in illegal constructions.
