  • How safe are gated communities?

A spate of daylight robberies in our society, which is supposed to be one of the best managed and manned and 'safe' has left residents scared and shocked. The thieves struck in the afternoon and decamped with jewellery and cash worth lakhs from two flats in the same tower. No one has a clue, including the developer, as to how could this happen when there are CCTVs and guards at each tower, besides the heavily guarded main gate! The robbers apparently came from the basement riding the lift and broke into the 6th floor house. The family had gone for some wedding in Ludhiana. Later, they stole stuff from a 7th floor flat. The CCTV apparently didn't catch the images, which points at insiders' involvement in the crime. Considering flats are sold on 24X7 security and CCTV theories, developers need to answer a lot and residents must check with their respective RWAs and developers regarding the cams. We have our kids playing all over the society premises and God forbid, some untoward incident happened in the basement, no one would have any clue.

Not to create any panic, but let me say, these high rise, dense and big societies are going to face a big challange of security concern. These untrained, underpain and unfaithful guarding system can be trushed. And the people who beileve that flats society are very secure might end up having a shock of life.

If i buy flat, i will prefer to buy above 2/ 3rd floor. And install heavy duty doors at entry gate. Higher floors, only way to enter is main gate
Yes, its better to take matter into own hands instead relying on other human's actions and god's kindness

First of all someone shouldn't put big cash and jewellery in house.
Any guard, security , RWA , Neighbours can't keep an eye on your property always.
Most of these security guards are low paid and on the name of security they have only security dress. Nothing else. They have no training and no power also. Anyone passing can shout on them. It is easy to blame security but how many of us do the police verifications of Maids. Even if we do, police pass it easily without actually checking. If guards stop our friends/ relatives to enter the society we shout on them and ask to allow them immediately as they are known to us.
To maintain any security system, first we should support it with proper verifications of maids and workers entering to the society. My PoV.

Re : How safe are gated communities?

Jaibhai already pointed out the reason.

It is the huge income gap of the security/maid/drivers/odd job people in the society. Generally they mingle in their own group and their intelligence is much stronger than the residents. They exactly khows who is where, which flat is empty, kis ka biwi se jhagda hua hain, kis ka woh nehin hota wagara wagara!!

Because of their huge income gap, they are always susceptible to instant greed, they are tempted to instant rich and the result is, this kind of theft and the worst is kidnapping. There had been cases where kids were killed for that small gold chain. This happens every where, irrespective of population. Unfortunately, not all cases are reported, neither all sociaety has Ritaji.

Solution? You can minimise it, but you can not avoid it.
