This afternoon, around 5 pm, NOIDA experienced a minor earthquake. The epicenter was somewhere around the India-Nepal border.

Can somebody with a sound grounding in structure design principles throw some light on how the upcoming buildings in NOIDA are resistant to earthquakes?

What about "lifestyle" buildings like SuperTech NorthEye?

  • NCR needs a desperate earthquake

Sometimes I think NCR really needs a earthquake so that few underconstruction super high-rise buildings come down which will prevent innocent users to buy in super highrise buildings . The biggest fact is that in India builders are so dishonest that we should n't be allowed to construct these sort of High rises. In other countries they don't even mix sand in the structures but in India we do.

We have our structures fall down just after the construction whether it's the common wealth bridge or some other. Save Life - Discoruage corruption- AVOID HIGH RISE.

  • EARTQUAKE FOBIA

    Hi Hitesh,
Being a civil engineer worked 10 yrs in India and now working in abroad, I try to put some words it might help you or similar people to get out of this Earthquake fear.
First of all please don't let down urself or your country by saying ki YAHA YE HOTA HAI AUR WAHA YE HOTA HAI. Let I explain you in regards of eartquake, there is no technology who avoid the building to collapse from eartquake if it is at very high RS say if it come at higher than 10. Japan is one of the coutry who adopts best technology in building construction to avoid the damage from earthquake and now you we can see what damaged hasbeen done there even after so much technology adoption. Indian Lovers-Please keep in mind our building designing still on traditional based (oversafe 50%), all highrise buildings are FRAMED STRUCTURED (SKELTON) and the building frame designed by professionals and these professionals make sure that builder do the right things by inspecting at evry pour. Because these are the person who comes in first row to face the consicious if something goes wrong in building structurally.
At the time of earthquake, majority of the damage in building is due to by infill walls because these individaul walls shake individaully and devlops cracks and get fell off. Building skelton shakes as a single unit because wholed structure design monolithically and remains safe most of the time.
Ye cement me mitti milane ka kaam tou flooring aur brickwork ke time hota hai - 90% of the time this happens because of the lack of supervision not because of the builder's instructions----kitna bacha loge yaar. SO BE POSITIVE AND KEEP ON HAMMERING THE BUILDER FOR BETTER QUALITY.

  • While I dont buy hitesh's point of wishing to experience a strong earthquake (it is very harsh to think on those lines), it is true that the situation is grim and the governing authority needs to put in place a process of periodic assessment of the buildings during their structure construction itself.
Let me tell you about my experience yesterday during the mild tremors. I sit on 2nd floor of a building that is hardly 4 yrs old, constructed by renowned builder and we experienced tremors for around 4-5 secs while my friend who works in a separate building just 200 meters from ours told that none in his organization experienced any such tremors. His is 15 yrs old building.
May be J Chauhan has a very valid point. More than the builder, it depends on the extent of supervision at the time of construction.

  • Lets not give incorrect information here...
Even after such high magnitude earth quake, not a single structure has collapsed in Japan. And this has happened due to technology and their wisdom to use it. The devastation we have witnessed was due to tsunami.

  • We can wake up a sleeping person but it's really difficult to wake up folks who are pretending to sleep. we need to understand the fact that our corrupt politicians like BMW have selling left and right for their personal benefit. And builders are maikng fool of innocent people by selling them highrise unsafe projects.
NO enduser can do the construction quality control of the builder they are just so helpless after paying the money that they just somehow want the possesion not even thinking about quality ..and to tell you the fact no builder will allow you to go to their construction site and test their quality.
We will need to accept the fact in such a dishonest country like ours it is very easy to get the earthquake certification by paying some money as bribe..history has witnessed the quake came in BHUJ many many buildings earth quake certified buildings came down like leaf no action has been taken against builder..ppl forget it like a natural disaster..

ALL I am saying is avoid high rise buildings that way the mass can discourage the corruption by not buying these so called certifed buildings..

I know people will still risk their lives by purchasing these apartments they will come to the real story once if NCR touches a magnitude 7.0 quake..

and then they will repent their decision at that time but it will be too late by then..believe prevention is always better then cure..

    Regards,
    Hitesh

We do understand your concern and highly appreciate that.

Unfortunately our integrity are so low that we can go to any length for just few rupees... coupled with our "Chalta Hain" attitude.

It may seems very harsh and inhuman, but we need a tragedy of that scale to shake us from core.

It's not only about the building quality and standard.... we need a proper crisis management plan, we need to educate our public about dos and don't of any crisis. In many of the cases, our public worsen the situation unknowingly or just due to sheer absence of consideration for other people.

During crisis, each and every timely right action saves many lives and a single wrong untimely action put everyone in danger. I had been someway involved in many crisis management team and do understand what does PLAN, COORDINATION and PREPAREDNESS means.

Just a correction, before Bhuj incident, there was no standard for earth quake resistant building... but again, in India standard means a fixed rate of bribe amount!!

Finally, as usual... "God save India"!

  • We have seen some earthquakes in India, if not Japan's intensity then Bhuj intensity. Also, it is not necessary ke India mein hum ek zabardast earthquake dekhein tabhi akal aayegi.
Agar akal aani hoti to Japan dekhkar bhi aa jati. Is their any builder who has improved quality after Japan quake, is their any government who made changes in building laws after Japan quake...NO.
Kutte ki poochh agar 12 mahine earthquake ki building ke niche padhi rahegi to bhi tedhi ki tedhi rahegi....
Agar earthquake wish karoge to bekaar mein hazaaron-lakhon log maare jayenge...governance ka kuchh nahin hoga, ye aise hi rahegi.
I am afraid agar Anna Hazare ne zid na chhodi to bechare ki jaan jayegi...ye desh aise hi chal raha tha, chal raha hai or chalta rahega.

Sorry, if I have hurt anyone's feeling...but this is my view.

  • THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE: TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

What to do During an Earthquake ?

Remember that stuff about hiding under a table or standing in a doorway? Well, forget it! This is a real eye opener. It could save your life someday.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON 'THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene -- unnecessary.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them - NOT under them. This space is what I call the 'triangle of life'. The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the 'triangles' you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.

    TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

    1) Most everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when building collapse are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

    2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

    3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

    4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

  • 5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

    6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

    7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of frequency' (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

    8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

    9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

    10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

Spread the word and save someone's life...

The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared!

'We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly'

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul , University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did 'duck and cover,' and ten mannequins I used in my 'triangle of life' survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions , relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the 'triangle of life.' This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA , Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

    "Triangle of Life":

Without listening or reading, simply by looking at the following self-explanatory photos, you can learn more than in a thousand words about how to protect yourself during a major earthquake...

If you are inside a vehicle, come out and sit or lie down next to it. If something falls on the vehicle, it will leave an empty space along the sides. See below:
