SP puts Maya projects under scrutiny

GREATER NOIDA: After the new state government stalled work on some of Mayawati's 'dream projects' in Gautam Budh Nagar, it has now decided to scrutinize all development projects that were initiated by the BSP government in the last five years.

To begin with, the SP government has directed the Greater Noida Authority to submit a detailed report on the construction of all parks, the Kanshiram hospital and the Gautam Buddha University among other projects and on the amount already spent on the projects. The Authority has also been directed to submit the list of tenders awarded for development projects in the last five years as well as the details of the contractors who were awarded contracts of construction work, etc.

The order also applies to projects in Noida as wells as those in areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority. Besides, following reports of irregularities, all payments to contractors and sub-contractors in Greater Noida have been halted temporarily.

"The state government has asked for the report from the Greater Noida Authority to get an idea of their status, the budget, the expenditures already incurred and to examine the utility of such expenditure," said a Greater Noida Authority official.

"We have already begun compiling the details and the report will be forwarded to the state government in the next couple of days. The report mainly relates to the cost of the projects, their status, and the circumstances under which or the reasons why these projects were initiated," added the official.

The Authority has also halted work on the multi-crore Kanshiram multispecialty hospital as well as the beautification work at Surajpur and the Hindon bridge.

            Akhilesh whip on Mayawati 'scams'

            Akhilesh whip on Mayawati 'scams'
            PUBLISHED: 23:38 GMT, 8 April 2012

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) administration has decided to set up a commission to investigate irregularities and scams committed during the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) administration between 2007 and 2012.

Though the government has yet to make its decision public, sources said a retired judge of the high court would head the commission and the state's vigilance department would assist it in.

Chief secretary Javed Usmani has reporedly asked the vigilance department to prepare a masterplan for the investigation.

The Mayawati government had been beset with several multi-crore scandals, and the most eye-popping was the Rs 5,700-crore national rural health mission (NRHM) scam that the CBI has been investigating.

The comptroller and auditor general (CAG), in its latest report, has pointed out that Rs 66 crore was mismanaged in construction of parks and memorials. It may sound incredulous, but the report says the stones from Chunar in UP were sent to Bayana in Rajasthan, some 670 km away, to cut and polish.
These were then transported 450 km for the parks in Lucknow. Moreover, about `700 crore was allegedly siphoned off in the name of over 4,00,000 fake beneficiaries of the state's old-age pension scheme.

The government had suspended 72 officials in March 2010 for their involvement in the Rs 200 crore national rural employment guarantee scheme (NREGS). The Opposition had alleged a mindboggling `25,000-crore scandal in the selling about two dozen state-run sugar mills to private houses.

These apart, the BJP had alleged that about Rs 10,000 crore was collected by allowing the liquor mafia to levy Rs 25 extra on each booze bottle.

Three statues of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati which were installed at a park in Lucknow

The party said another, and a much bigger, Rs 40,000 crore came from builders and industrialists through land deals in Noida, Greater Noida and other districts of western UP along the Yamuna Expressway. Sources said all these so-called scams would be investigated and the report would be submitted within a stipulated time.

The state government has also agreed in principle to empower the Lokayukta system and appoint some more members to ensure a time-bound investigation. It said the economic offences wing of the state police would assist it.

'The CM has already approved the draft for the commission, while chief secretary Javed Usmani has put his signature on it. The details would be made public soon,' a government official said.
