Almost all builder claims it and some certification from IIT. Don't know reality.

Then it is better to wait for an earthquake.:D

  • Delhi is an earthquake prone area, so its better to select the project which at-least claims to be earthquake resistant

  • Delhi and Noida come into different seismic jones. Noida is at lower risk than Delhi.

Any building built with RCC is earthquake resistant upto a level...

Most of the good builders prefer RCC these days but still many builders are using simple low cost bricks to reduce their costs

Yeh to earthquake aane ke baad hi pata chalega ki kon si building earthquake resistant thi :)

No...I dont think ANY builder is constructing without an RCC frame. A multistorey would almost 100% collapse if only bricks were used.

Brick quality may differ but its not right to say RCC is NOT being used. Bricks are structurally an infill on the RCC frame. They help support but are not the primary structural member - that is the RCC frame - foundation, beam and columns.

The issue is how well are they doing the RCC work. Is the Cement/Sand/Aggregate mix correct. Is the quality/thickness/tie of the steel fine, are all structural members at perfect right angles. Is the foundation deep enough and strong enough for the soil characteristics etc etc etc

  • ha ha after the yesterdays quake everyone has started worrying about the future earthquakes. Infact we should only invest in project which is earthquake resistant

"Earthquake Resistance" is joke word. Does not convey any meaning.

Issue is what is resistance level?

The structural safety of a building against earthquake depends of building design. The design has to be made based on factors like soil quality for foundation, load factor, earthquake zone location etc.

When builders are cutting corners and adding floors post-foundation, only GOD knows what is the safety. They also cut corners in terms of quality of steel & cement used, proper mix & water curing. Collapse of many high rises in Ahmedabad happened precisely for these reasons.

IIT can do the structural design but who is checking execution?

Just for my knowledge I have two questions

    1) How do u define high rise - How many floors etc

    2) Is it better if we are staying on lower floors of high rise building in case of earthquake happens

  • Mostly all builders commit for earthquake resistant projects, but it all depends on the richter scale how much it is?

  • Anyway Noida does not have a history of serious earthquakes....

  • Making a structure earthquake resistant is to ensure the primary load carrying members (beam, column, shear wall, foundation etc.) are strong enough to take the resultant seismic forces.
Also the frame consisting of these members and their connections with each other are properly designed to facilitate the dissipation of earthquake energy.
Beam to column connection reinforcement is to be properly detailed to ensure a safe structural behavior during an EQ.
Soil investigation is very important to assess the hazards of settlement and subsistence. If supporting soil is very loose or soft it may lead to collapse of building even if the building is strong enough to withstand EQ forces. Piles are necessary in such cases.
There are building codes which govern seismic design, they are followed by structural consultants/engineers but most of the times builders do not pay heed to these details and cut corners as rightly said by fellow posters. We should be aware and try to see if they are following the drawings and details as given by the consultants.
Delhi/NCR is Zone IV which is one below from maximum danger zone.

Magnitude of an earthquake is important as also is its Intensity. Ydays EQ was of quite high magnitude but what we felt here was weak as the intensity was low.
Earthquake resistant is a suitable term but its resistant only for an earthquake its designed for or a weaker one. Not for any earthquake. It is not a definitive science, its highly probabilistic.

  • Let us say if an earthquake of intensity 7.5 hits sometimes in future, will these buildings be able to withstand this and save our lives

  • I Recall, During one of the lecture of Stuctural engineering (Part - 2) in MS Bidve College of Engineering it was discussed that no stucture is fully earthquacke resistance.

The design is made on the basis of earthquack resistanec for 4 Ric or 6 ric etc.====You can check on net.

Also no one in this mortal world can fight with nature .
