  • How can we reduce carbon footprint at home and work?

What kind of initiatives can help reduce individual carbon footprint and at places of work?

Re : How can we reduce carbon footprint at home and work?

Well, reducing carbon footprint is simpler and hence complex as it needs small and out-of-the-box changes at individual levels, be it home or work.

Just to add - a research by the Global Carbon Project had estimated that the global carbon emission for 2018 would be hitting 37.1 billion tonnes. All countries were guilty of such rise in the pollution levels. India was said to have contributed 6.3% to the total quantity.

Well, logged in after a long time. Nothing much happening in real estate and the forum it seems. Let's wait for real estate to get back into the groove Anyway, this was an interesting topic so just hopped in. You know, the problem about carbon footprint and it's likes is that very few know about it and even fewer care about it. This is one of the topics at social gatherings and official hangouts to show how much we know about 'what's harming our dear earth' and then go back to harming it the way we all do.

The carbon footprint can be reduced by following small and easy steps, like avoiding the use of plastic, not discarding kitchen waste, segregating waste etc.

Can you elaborate? By avoiding use of plastic you mean plastic bags and all?

Yes, plastic bags are one of the things made by plastic. We could also minimise the use of plastics bottles, pots, boxes, containers and decorative materials made of plastic. Instead, we should use multi-use items like glass, ceramics, steel or naturally produced items. They are environment as well as health friendly.

Using plastic bags and materials made of plastic is hardwired into our brains. We won't stop using those easily! Every time we go to a shop to buy something we come up with the default request "bhaiyaa thaili hai kya?" It will take an entire generation to bring about that change. Luckily, the young are more concerned about the environment at least if only for their social statuses. It will take time but it will change for sure.

Yes, sadly, that is how it goes. We happen to be a very unconcerned society at some level where everything is just about okay if others are doing those things too. Plastic is a bane more than it is a boon in some cases, or plain useful. We have to make people understand and obey the rules or simply make them too difficult to break.

I agree with both of you. We lack a sense of responsibility when it comes to matters related to the environment. A simple thing like not using plastic is made too difficult by the people. Anyway, what other things can be done to cut down on the carbon footprint?
