Re : How can we reduce carbon footprint at home and work?

Sadly, that is the case with most of us. Failure to segregate waste is more of a habit disorder for us as a society. We have not been told or taught to do so since childhood and so we fail to do so. However, the younger generation is becoming more aware and concerned and hence such things won't continue in the years that follow.

Yes, you are right about that. It is difficult to break a habit that has been the way of living since generations. Maybe the young generation will be different like you say.

We have to believe and make sure that we change into an environment loving era. We have to understand that waste segregation has a lot of benefits. Like said earlier, bio-waste can be converted into manure and fodder. Similarly, non-biodegradable waste can be recycled into new products, thus, reducing the carbon footprint further.

Also, the use of energy-efficient light bulbs can help reduce electricity consumption. As compared to regular lighting, LED lights are affordable and provide more luminance. The use of smart lighting can also be great help as it can be turned on/off through gestures. You can get smart thermostats, which cool/heat according to the occupancy status of the room.

Carbon footprint is something that can be reduced a lot if people started taking individual responsibilities. But there lies the main problem - for us, it is always the other person's fault. So, the 'other person' has to improve for our acts to count. Sadly, everyone has the same viewpoint and hence the 'other person' never changes and so the environment remains the same.

Individual responsibility is the problem for us humans as we think individually when it comes to benefits or laurels but the moment something goes wrong, it is a collective thing that everyone is responsible for!

Malvish Energy-efficient light bulbs do help reduce electricity consumption as per industry experts but I don't know about the affordability comparison. As much as I have heard, energy efficient bulbs are costlier than other bulbs, or are they? And smart lighting solutions are just too expensive as we have been discussion in another thread.

Re : How can we reduce carbon footprint at home and work?

like everyone knows, waste segregation is a time consuming effort and even most of the people who know about it don't do it. No matter how vital to reducing the carbon footprint, segregating waste as dry and wet would require separate bins or plastic bags. So, it doubles the time and effort and people just don't want to do it. Though many people have now started segregating waste owing to various campaigns going around, few are able to follow through. It will take some forceful initiative of the administration to get such a rule implemented.

NAVIRATY that is what we have been talking about - small and out-of-the box changes don't happen easily. It is difficult for me to bring about such changes myself and that is the problem with all of us. We have been hardwired to act in ways that have become regular. So, we find it hard to break the regular. I won't be surprised if you yourself wouldn't be following all that we talk about (please don't disagree and tell us how much you are the nature loving types and doing everything perfectly. though that would be assuring that the world is changing - just kidding). It is difficult for all of us.
