Re : Energy saving tips for home owners

The problem with urban planning today, as per experts, is that their designs are based on the assumption of limitless supply of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) resources. There are no efforts being made to tap renewable energy, to meet the need for power.

Malvish I agree on that. We waste a lot of resources that you mentioned and the assurance of unlimited power supply is also one of the major drawbacks.

mmalhot Indeed that is a major drawback. According to a research by a Pune based NGO, residential electricity consumption has gone up by 50 times since 1971 and now forms about a quarter of India’s total electricity consumption, up from about four per cent in 1971.

Energy-efficient homes that use energy-efficient appliances can decrease the total residential energy consumption by a huge amount.

Malvish I agree with the fact that energy efficient homes and appliances can help a lot. For example, air conditioners consume much more energy than all the other household appliances combined. So, an energy-efficient 1.5-ton split air-conditioner can utilise 30-40 per cent less electricity than an ordinary 1.5-ton split air-conditioner, used for the same amount of time. Similarly, a faulty or inefficient refrigerator contributes to 25-50 percent of the electricity consumption and hence increase the annual electricity bill by a few thousands.

Studies reveal that the use of efficient appliances can help save 15-25 per cent on the regular consumption.
