Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy on Wednesday asserted that the government would not acquire lands for Special Economic Zones (SEZ) on its own and said that it would be the responsibility of the companies, which proposed to set up the SEZs, to buy lands for their ventures.

Intervening the discussion on demands for grants for Rural Industries department in the State Assembly, the Minister said after the Nandigram incident, the Centre had decided the companies which desired to establish SEZs should buy the lands on their own. The Minister said this when AIADMK member KS Vijayakumar urged the government to give up the policy of acquiring cultivable lands for setting up SEZs ~
