I am afraid that u would find almost none Compact Furniture ideas for Indian conditions . If u r living in a place like Mumbai, where space is a big constraint, u should be able to find some Big Furniture stores catering to this . The web is full of sites with designs of such furniture, but one would need to check their compatibility to Indian conditions . I think, if u have the time, money & the inclination, take the help of a professional interior designer .

Here is an article, i just read -

    Small Home Décor Tips

There are people who own a large house, but its contents are so haphazardly placed that the space looks all cluttered and small. On the other hand, there are couples who live in tiny apartments, but everything including the insignificant knick-knacks is so orderly kept that one can live quite decently there. This means that even you live or have to live in a small home or apartment; it doesn’t mean that you can adorn it well. Although decorating a small home is a very big challenge, it is not impossible. In fact, when decorated correctly, even a small space looks and feels more spacious. So, choose the décor for your small home intelligently and half your problem will be solved. Given here are some inspiring ideas and tips on how to decorate your small home.

    Small Home Decorating Ideas

Take the help of a professional interior designer or a home interior decoration book. This will help you plan out what furnishings will properly fit into your small apartment, without taking too much space.

Opt for multi-purpose furniture. For instance, a bed that can fold up into a sofa set in the morning time. You could also do with a multi-shelved bookcase, one of whose horizontal doors can be opened flat to be used as a study table.

Color co-ordination in small home is as, or perhaps even more, important than in bigger homes. Try to choose light, neutral colors for the walls, floor, ceiling, curtains and even furniture, as they provide a very roomy feel. Go for creams, taupe and soft yellows. The lighter the color, the larger the room will look. And avoid using dark colors as much as possible, because they seem to constrict space.

Add mirrors where possible, as they can create an illusion of extra space in your home.

Remove all your interior doors and closets and replace them with curtains, thus creating more space and adding to the overall appeal as well.

To create an expansive feeling, choose track lighting that aims at walls, to free up the floor space.

When selecting décor furnishing for small home or apartments, try sticking to the least fussy and compact looking items. Try making optimum use of odd-shaped corners in the house, by putting lampshades or bookcases there.
Choose woodwork in light colors, like white oak, ash, maple, etc.

Clean your windows regularly, so as to allow more light to come in and also to make sure that your view is not blocked.

Transfer all music to your computer and sell your CDs, if possible, and go wireless to look less messy.

    Note

When living in small home or space, try keeping the house as clean and organized as possible. This measure is most crucial, because otherwise all your efforts to decorate your hearth innovatively will go in vain. It should be the responsibility of each and every family member, not just of one person, occupying that house to keep it neat and clean. Start with your children, as they tend to scatter things the most. And make the most of the available space.

          Ward off closet blues

Bedrooms in most apartments are no longer very spacious huge rooms as would have been in our ancestral houses and closets too have shrunk accordingly. Small space calls for 'big' organised effort to keep your closets tidy and organised. The solution is to avoid few mistakes which people generally commit:

1.Too much stuff: A cramped closet is just too frustrating. Store just the clothes which you wear and give away the old aged clothes. This option would give you more space.

2.Wasted space: Hanging short and long clothes together wastes the space below the short items. Group similar items together then place a rod wherever there is a big enough gap.

3.Hanging storage: Shelves and drawers are as important as shelves for casual lifestyle and wardrobe. Maintain 6 inch unused space in hanging rods.

4.Wire hangers: The drycleaners give away these to us for free and clothing stores avoid them, these hangers bend, leave marks and can't hold much weight. Thus avoid using these.

5.Shelves without dividers: The long shelf above most closet rods invites messy piles of clothing or that tangle or topple over. Add clip on shelf dividers or add a row of bins or boxes to create order.

6.No floor strategy: Don't store shoes or floors because it might get damaged by vacuum cleaners and moreover it looks very messy. Add shoe cabinets for shoes, use low boards to keep things organised.

7.Use strong shelving of wood than wire shelves leaving lines on the clothes.

8.Adjustable shelves: These are better than the fixed ones as one can adjust the height anytime.

9.No lights above closets-Avoid this! Add a ceiling light or LED shelves in closet for proper lit up closet.

10.Keep a His and her section in closet. Make divisions rather than stacking all clothes together.

                  Space sense

In today’s time when a square foot of area costs so much, it is important to make a maximum utilisation of the available space. A strategic use of every nook and corner has become mandatory.

Two areas which seek more attention are bedroom and living room. Well, creating a perfect ambience in a small bedroom can be a tricky thing to do. Clutter will invariably be a problem in even the best kept rooms and there will be not much room for solely ornamental items and objects. This can make the room look small, claustrophobic or cramped. However, with some decorating and arranging tips it is possible to make a small room appear more open and inviting.

                  Layer effect

There are many ways through which one can create an illusion of space. The first way to provide such an illusion is through “layering”. It is done by arranging solid colours in front of each other in a contrasting fashion. This can be achieved, for example, by painting the walls in your room a specific colour and have the furniture in a different but in an equally solid colour. The trick here works particularly well with bright or vivid colours as it separates items from each other and removes clutter. However, one should use strong and vivid colours of different shades only as it does not allow things to blend with each other, thereby creating an illusion of gap between them.

                  Colour code

Secondly, one can paint the dividing line and blocks on walls in different colours. This makes the room appear spacious. Dense and overcomplicated wallpapers also create clutter in a room and should be avoided. Subtle break points, such as subtly contrasting white and cream alternating squares, can add noticeable depth to a room even if such depths do not actually physically exist. Human eye has a tendency to create a 3D illusion when they see a set of contrasting colours put one by one. Therefore, when similar wallpaper is placed on a comparatively smaller room human eye apparently perceives a bigger space around. This highlights the importance of the bedroom's walls being the most important part of the room when it comes to creating space.

                  Subtle touch

On the other hand, space can also be created by removing unwanted items. Things which cover much space and have comparatively less utility can be shifted to somewhere else. For example, a huge sofa can be replaced with cane furniture which is smaller, lighter and thinner. This may apply to many things such as photo frames, flower vases etc. Use of soft textures, fittings and furniture also helps in increasing the space in a room, especially in bedrooms.

Instead of a large cornered bed, one can use a low-height soft-edged bed with fitted sheets and quilt.

Use of soft textures like silk or satin can also make a huge difference.
